Supernatural AU for Roland
[The little hamlet along the forest hasn't had a good time. Surrounded by magical creatures on all sides, they've decided to get a little... proactive in dealing with their problem. When night falls, hunters armed with crossbows and improvised weapons--hoes, shovels, and long hunting knives--come out to patrol.
This time, one of them's squaring off with one of the local werewolves. At this full moon, Firo's completely in wolf form, nearly indistinguishable from an actual wolf when he's not speaking.
The crossbow's been knocked aside, its string broken. The two circle each other, and then the wolf leaps for the hunter's leg to sink his teeth into it.
He's going to make sure that this hunter realizes it's best to leave the business.]

[Firo bites his lip and thinks of what he can construct.]
...I just wanna go home. This isn't getting us anywhere!
[But he'll try. Instead of going back to their homes in the town or the den they have in the woods, though, Firo thinks back to earlier this night. There's the moon, there're the trees, and there're the crossbows. Firo bites his lip in concentration.]
Where were you before you saw me? Tell me so I can take us there.
no subject
[There's a pause. When he resumes he sounds slow, thoughtful.]
Your pack were there. They knew it too, didn't they, that they needed to be stopped. You knew it. I never really considered you.
Perhaps we were there at the same time. East side of the village. More undergrowth, mostly young trees - don't get the older ones until you go deeper inside, the parts of the forest the humans seldom go. You know the look of it, I'm sure.
That is what you'd meant to be doing, isn't it, you and your pack? You were there for the hunters?
no subject
[How'd he know? Did the shadow smell his family nearby?]
I went ahead.
[But he doesn't want to focus on that just now. He wants to see what Roland was doing. Firo flicks his wrist impatiently, and the faint image of a werewolf stalking through the bushes disappears.
Think. Younger trees, he said. Firo shuts his eyes, and when he opens them, the trees are smaller and greener.]
Like this? Can you take over? I wanna find out what happened to us. We have to retrace our steps.
[Maybe they're bound by some sort of weirdness from... whatever the shadow is. Firo's sure it's nothing to do with him.]
no subject
Once I knew how many of 'em there'd be and where, I went to the village. Is that what you wanted to see? Just what is it you're trying to trace?
no subject
I wanna see what started this--why we're stuck here. I don't know about you, but this kinda thing isn't normal for me. And it never happened until you showed up, so...
[He shrugs and focuses on the scene. What else can he do?]
...I don't know when you first showed up in my fight. Keep going.
no subject
[Moonlight flutters across the hunter's face again. That and the quickly moving view of the forest are the only indications the shadow was moving, and his thoughts still seem to come from nowhere in particular.]
I went to the village, killed a few, crossed your path.
[The view around them will begin to reflect that in a moment.]
Maybe I should have paid more attention to what the hunters were carrying than I did. Maybe that's the key. Or something you did, perhaps. Were you up to anything unusual?
no subject
Me? I wasn't doin' anything!
[Wait, that probably sounds suspicious. He folds his arms over his chest and looks away. Be casual.]
...I was just out for a hunt. Nothing special. Then they showed up and wouldn't mind their own business.
no subject
no subject
I did. What's that got to do with anything? I've got a right to defend myself if sketchy guys like that come around.
no subject
If the key to this is in something one of us did, I don't know how to find it. Not much more to it than hunting, is there?
no subject
[As he snaps, the scene he'd nagged the shadow to create doesn't evaporate--but it is interrupted by some inaccuracy. Hazy outlines of wolves and men filter past Firo, their laughter and howling echoing through the night as if made by giants. Firo watches them longingly, then whips his face back towards the shadow.]
Don't you have anybody you need to get home too?
no subject
I still have work to do. But with those hunters taken care of, it can wait a while. Why so urgent? Are they going to be needing you for something?
no subject
[Firo shakes his head to clear it. The light out in the woods catches his eye, and he takes a few cautious steps toward it.]
They don't need me, but I--
[He wants to be with them. Firo clenches both fists.]
It's my job to be with them. That's what I'm supposed to do--they're my pack.
no subject
[The shadow nods. That he understands. Those steps toward the memory of light, that the shadow does not respond to. He's hardly noticed it's there.]
Any more immediate reason to get back? If they don't need you and you don't need them, we can take our time about figuring all this out, here.
no subject
[Firo blinks at the shadow, voice verging on distress. Is this guy speaking a different language? Yeah, Firo said straight out he wasn't needed, but he could be! Surely anyone would see that! Even a guy who's not necessary could be useful--and at any moment, so there's every reason to return immediately.]
Of course I gotta 'immediate reason'! I just told you! Don't you get how this stuff works?
[Absent any real direction, Firo starts for that light. He looks over his shoulder to make sure the shadow's following--and in case he needs to yell at him more.]
no subject
[There's a pause. The shadow looks down, thinking, and when he looks up the boy's already started walking. The shadow doesn't need to walk to catch up; in a second he is beside him.]
It has to do with pack somehow. That's where I'm misunderstanding you. Do your superiors expect you to be available to them at all times?
no subject
Hm. If there's some sort of hidden insult in here, Firo doesn't see it. He decides to proceed cautiously all the same.]
I--well, yeah, why not? We stick together, that's what we do.
no subject
Never did enjoy being kept in the dark. I still don't understand what's so urgent about it. Mayhap it's too self evident for you to tell me. Must be a wolf thing.
Headed anywhere in particular?
no subject
[In context, his bafflement may seem obtuse, but it's genuine. This is a wolf thing.]
Don't you see that light? Maybe it's something. We don't exactly have any leads now.
no subject
I may not understand your duty to your pack, but I understand mine. I understand that my duty is something I ought kill to keep secret.
[And then, because it has occurred to him that not everything is so obvious to the living as it is to him-]
You're moving toward it right now. There are risks involved in seeing, Firo Prochainezo, and not all of them come from me. Not too late - you can turn back yet.
no subject
[Firo peers back over his shoulder.]
What's so important about keepin' it a secret? I won't tell anybody.
[Doesn't exactly have anyone to tell right now, which is why he can make that promise so lightly.]
no subject
That isn't the point, anyway. Or not all of it. Some who saw there was no need to kill. Some ran mad.
Do you need to know, Firo Prochainezo? Do you truly need to see?
no subject
[He bristles at the question but calms quickly enough to drop the major caveat as an afterthought. It's just obvious:]
Well, I'd tell my pack when I saw 'em, but that's different.
...Besides, they need to know if there's a guy making people go crazy in the area.
[And doesn't this guy know that giving him information just makes him more curious? Curiosity may kill the cat, but there's always another kitty who refuses to learn from the example of the ones before him.]
no subject
[That thought's a little bit stronger than the rest of them, a little more forceful, because he's just a little bit angry.]
You'd promise to keep a secret in one breath and break that promise in the very next? You'd doom your pack to that, to seeing what I've kept so well hidden all this time, to- what? For what purpose? What could possibly make unity with your pack, sharing truth with them, that important?
no subject
But they should know anything I know. That's different.
[He pauses. There was something pretty dire in the rest of the shadow's words, wasn't there? He finally stops walking and shifts to face the shadow completely.]
Why do you think it'd doom us?
